Observatorio de la Sostenibilidad en Aviación (OBSA) | Observatory of Sustainability in Aviation

Objective

The main objective was to achieve the reduction of the environmental impact on air transportation in all its aspects, through:

  • Collection, selection, implementation, and validation of a series of sustainability indicators to assess the environmental impact on air transportation.
  • Collection, selection, implementation, and validation of tools and models to plan the reduction of the environmental impact of air transportation.
  • Put the indicators, models and tools at disposal of the involved agents.

Phases

Research was broken down into the following phases:

  1. Source identification to obtain a series of indicators backed up and contrasted, as well as cataloguing indicators methods, their selection criteria and a list of tools and models simulating the main environmental effects in aviation.
  2. Information storage. In this phase, databases needed to store the information obtained from located sources in a classified and structured manner are designed.
  3. Selection of cataloguing methods.
  4. Criteria for indicator selection.
  5. Analysis of compiled models to discriminate the most adequate operations database, Spanish airports and aircraft to carry out emission calculations of air transportation.
  6. Putting at the involved agents' disposal the selected indicators.
