Results

As a result of the collection, cataloguing and analysis of the impact indicators of air transportation within the environment, those indicators best representing aviation sustainability were validated. And for that purpose, those indicators which appeared most times and/or were of greater quantity were published in memoirs and reports of the checked sources (authorities/bodies, airlines, airports, airport managerial entities, and manufacturers) which are considered to be the most demanded by aviation.

Likewise it has been chosen the indicators which represent each of the subject matters of interest for sustainability and aviation. A summary of the selected indicators is shown below:

Energy efficiency

• Evolution of energy consumption in airports and air navigation per year (GWh)
• CO2 emissions per passenger and kilometre
• Fuel consumption per seat and 100 km for flights operated in Spain

Air quality

• Air quality at airports. Comparison with air quality in city centres
• Emissions of pollutant gases in the airports: aircrafts, GSE/APU, Accesses and Car Parks

Climate change

• Evolution of greenhouse gas emission, acidifier and tropospheric ozone precursors in airports and en-route, of national traffic

Territory

• Evolution of water consumption in airports and air navigation, per year (m3)
• Evolution in generation of hazardous waste at airports, per year (t)
• Evolution in generation of nonhazardous waste at airports, per year (t)

Noise

• Number of people exposed to noise at the main airports
