ANNA Group

Grupo ANNA

ANNA Group (Aircraft Noise Non Acoustic) is an informal group for technical discussion formed by specialists in different disciplines from around the world. Initially focused on the non- acoustic effects of aircraft noise, nowadays it also covers topics on air quality and climate change.

The goals of the group are the following:

  • Share information among international experts on these topics to share knowledge.
  • Facilitate research and policymaking.
  • Contribute to the best implementation of measures.

The ANNA group is coordinated and leaded by:

  • Dave Southgate, (accountable of the Australian Department of Transports and member of the Aviation Environmental Protection Committee of ICAO.
  • Pieter Jan Stallen, from Leiden University (The Netherlands), specialist in aircraft noise and its public impact. .

ANNA organises annual meetings which participants are authorities, airport managers, air traffic providers, research centres and universities. The information discussed at the meetings is related to the possible effects from aircraft noise using public and contrasted information.

The last meetings of the group took place in Amsterdam (2005), Manchester (2006), Vienna (2007), Stockholm (2008), Edinburgh (2009) and the meeting of year 2010 took place in Madrid, hosted by the Observatory of Sustainability in Aviation (OBSA).

The purpose of this meeting was to have an exchange of ideas among people from a wide range of specialties and countries, through open and informal presentations where all attendees could participate.

The presentations dealt with the problems of attitude facing noise, emissions and climate change. Furthermore, representatives were asked to encourage discussion rather than being conventional speakers; any member of the public may ask questions, express points of view or add information.

ANNA group had the chance to present the results of its discussion in the Aviation Noise and Emissions Reduction Symposium (ANERS). The ANNA annual workshop was celebrated in parallel to this event in Marseille, in October 24–26 2011. The presentation, made by César velarde (SENASA/OBSA) in the name of the technical discussion group, contained an overview of the main conclusions and principles object of debate in ANNA as well as some successful examples of its application.

Wyle

Wyle

It is a company specialized in high technology services for the aerospace industry. It carry out studies for public entities (airports) and other private companies of the sector in terms of noise, and develops advanced technology to manage the control of non-acoustic and acoustic nuisances. Its Acoustic Division offers a wide range of professional services in the areas of noise and vibration. It is noteworthy the extensive list of newsletters and forums offered, among which is the one dedicated to non-acoustic measures to reduce noise nuisance.

EUROCONTROL

EUROCONTROL

EUROCONTROL, European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation, is a civilian and military organization composed by 39 Member States and the European Commission, which aims to develop a safe, efficient and coordinated European air traffic. .

In addition to several studies on acoustic factors, between 2002 and 2005, EUROCONTROL conducted a study entitled Attitudes to Aircraft Annoyance Around Airports (5A) that analyses the response to aircraft noise in three European airports, based on the premise that the use of standard noise curves associated to rates do not reflect the value or the actual discomfort of dwellers of the neighbour communities, as it is modified by other social, economic and cultural factors (e.g. income and expectations of quality of life).
